Recommended Apps

There are some really fabulous educational apps out there. Some are specifically designed for the 11 plus (see the links below).  There are also many great apps out there that whilst not specifically designed for 11+ preparation will still will help your child learn relevant content for the exam.  I am a big fan of using technology for educational purposes and this is what I do in my role in Primary School.  Playing games via an educational app is a great way for your child to learn. Take a 'little and often' approach to using these apps, allowing your child to dip in and out of them.  Top Tip- don't tell your child it is an 'educational' app!

The apps listed below are not designed specifically for the 11+ but are great for developing the essential skills required. You may wish to purchase some of these. Some of them are also free.

    • Squeebles Spelling  This spelling app allows you to create your own spelling tests and audio record the words.  Pupils are then able to hear and see the word when learning/testing the spellings. I have had good results with this app- particularly if your child finds it difficult to remember spelling patterns. Your child will be provided with a list of 250 Most Commonly Misspelt Words to learn.  This app could be used to help learn those spellings by creating their own tests each week.  Please see me in the lesson if you want help with setting up the tests on the app.
    • SpellFix Apps These are a great bundle of apps that test not only spelling but the word meaning too- so great skills building for the 11+.  The word lists are also matched to the National Curriculum so this will be beneficial for their school spellings too.

    • Squeebles Maths Apps (various)  I use many of the maths apps developed by Squeebles and find them all to be high quality with meaningful interaction (always my marker for testing if an app is worth using for educational purposes). These maths apps are useful for practising and testing some of the basic maths skills needed for the 11 plus.  Tip- You can buy all of the Squeebles Apps as a bundle on the App Store and it works out cheaper.
    • Astro Algebra   A brilliant help to help understand algebra.
    • 3D Shapes Useful for helping to learn the properties of 3D shapes.
    • Synonyms Quiz . An excellent app for learning synonyms.
    • Piko's Blocks  A useful app for 3D spatial awareness.  This app is free and there is no need to pay (the ridiculously high price) for the upgrade.  The free version is sufficient.

    • Any Word : A nice app for building vocabulary.  Also helps with spellings.

    • Factor Samurai:  This a great app for helping your child to understand the concept of factors and prime numbers. The pupils in the school I teach at LOVE this app!

Idiom Land:  This is a useful set of flashcards with pictures to help learn idioms. They are mainly American so not all of them are relevant, but it is still a useful resource to help with comprehension skills.  Be warned though- it does contain the idiom 'The Birds And The Bees' with an explanation- parental discretion advised!
